Common Indian Railways PNR status codes

PNR status abbreviations describe a reservation position. A waitlist code identifies a quota or queue; it does not guarantee that a ticket will confirm.

CodeMeaning
CNFConfirmed reservation. Coach and berth details may appear after charting.
RACReservation Against Cancellation. Check the final status and applicable travel rules.
GNWLGeneral waitlist, usually associated with bookings from or near the train’s originating area.
RLWLRemote Location waitlist, used for certain intermediate-station quotas.
PQWLPooled Quota waitlist shared by a group of stations.
TQWLTatkal Quota waitlist.
CAN / MODReservation cancelled or modified; check the booking service for details.

Booking status vs current PNR status

Booking status records the passenger’s position when the reservation was made. Current status is the latest position available from the enquiry and can change as cancellations, quota releases or other reservation updates occur. Recheck before travel, especially if the ticket is waitlisted or RAC.

How to read coach and berth details

When the reservation details include an allocation, the coach and berth fields identify where the passenger is assigned. For example, B1 / 22 / LB can indicate coach B1, berth 22 and lower berth. Common berth abbreviations include LB (lower), MB (middle), UB (upper), SL (side lower) and SU (side upper). Availability of these details depends on the reservation and chart status.

Railway chart preparation and PNR updates

Chart preparation is when reservation allocation details are finalized for a particular train service. Timing can differ by train and operational conditions, so use the chart status returned for your PNR rather than relying on a fixed number of hours. Before charting, a waitlist position may still change; after charting, check the final status and any coach or berth assignment.

Waitlist types and confirmation chances

GNWL, RLWL, PQWL and TQWL refer to different reservation queues. Their movement depends on the train, date, route, quota and cancellations, so no waitlist number alone can promise confirmation. Treat predictions as estimates and rely on the latest PNR enquiry and official railway guidance for travel decisions.

Where to find your PNR number

  • Printed reservation ticket: look for the PNR printed with the booking details.
  • Online booking: check the confirmation SMS or email, or the booking history in the service used to reserve.
  • Agent booking: check the ticket or confirmation message supplied by the travel agent.
  • Unreserved travel: unreserved tickets generally do not include a reservation PNR.

PNR status FAQs

What is a PNR number?

A PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a 10-digit reference for a railway reservation. It links the journey and passenger details for one booking.

What is the difference between booking status and current status?

Booking status is the passenger position recorded when the ticket was booked. Current status is the latest position returned by the enquiry service and may change as reservations are updated.

What do CNF, RAC, GNWL and RLWL mean?

CNF means confirmed, RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation, and GNWL and RLWL identify different waitlist quotas. The queue and its movement depend on the train, route, quota and availability.

Why is a coach or berth number not shown?

Coach and berth details may not be assigned or shown until chart preparation. Check the latest PNR enquiry closer to departure and confirm details with official railway sources.

When is the railway reservation chart prepared?

Chart preparation time can vary by train and operating conditions. Check the chart status shown with your PNR and use official railway or IRCTC services for the latest information.

Can I travel with a waitlisted or RAC ticket?

Travel eligibility depends on ticket type, booking channel and final status under current railway rules. Check the final status and confirm your case with official railway or IRCTC guidance before boarding.

Where can I find my 10-digit PNR?

For a reserved journey, look on the ticket or in the booking confirmation SMS, email, or booking history from the service used to book. Unreserved tickets generally do not have a PNR.
